linux.conf.au

Let’s continue talking about what I did in Sydney.
From the 15th to the 20th of January I attended the linux.conf.au (http://lca2007.linux.org.au/), which is one of the most important linux conferences in the world (this is also proven by the number of participants: more than 800).

Driven by my interests, I was at the embedded miniconf on Monday, where, among other things, the Qtopia Greenphone was presented; then I followed the multimedia related presentations, like Jokosher, a multi-track studio for audio production (http://www.jokosher.org/), the PulseAudio sound server (http://pulseaudio.org/), MythTV (a personal video recorder: http://www.mythtv.org/) and the streaming server Flumotion (http://www.flumotion.net/).
Among the “less technical” presentations I was particularly interested in one about promoting open source projects and another one about how to start an open source business. Is open source the future of the Information Technology?
Among the “peculiar” presentations I must definitely mention the one on the open source Segway (http://www.netcraft.com.au/geoffrey/meta/), the urban vehicle of the future.

The keynotes were very interesting, but I’ll write another post for them.

Continuiamo a parlare di quello che ho fatto a Sydney.
Dal 15 al 20 gennaio ho partecipato alla linux.conf.au (http://lca2007.linux.org.au/), che è considerata una delle più importanti conferenze per linuxari del mondo, e ciò è dimostrato dal numero di partecipanti, più di 800.
Seguendo i miei interessi, ho partecipato alla embedded miniconf del lunedì, dove è stato mostrato tra l’altro il Qtopia Greenphone, un telefono basato su linux, ed ho poi seguito le presentazioni relative a multimedia, quali Jokosher, uno studio multi-traccia per la produzione audio (http://www.jokosher.org/), il sound server PulseAudio (http://pulseaudio.org/), MythTV (per la registrazione di contenuti video digitali: http://www.mythtv.org/) e lo streaming server Flumotion (http://www.flumotion.net/).
Tra le presentazioni meno “tecniche” mi hanno particolarmente interessato quelle relative a come promuovere progetti open source e a come iniziare un business basato sull’open source. Sarà questo il futuro dell’Information Technology?

Tra le presentazioni “particolari” devo senz’altro menzionare quella su come costruire un Segway (http://www.netcraft.com.au/geoffrey/meta/), il veicolo metropolitano del futuro.

Le keynote sono state estremamente interessanti, ma a quelle dedicherò un post a parte.

Paloheinä

Last week it snowed a lot, and this morning it was 10 °C with a beautiful sun: perfect conditions for going skiing for the first time this year.
I was in Paloheinä with Janne and I had a lot of fun (but it will be a different story tomorrow, when all my muscles will start complaining).

La scorsa settimana ha nevicato un bel po’, ed oggi c’erano -10 gradi con un bel sole: condizioni perfette per la prima sciata dell’anno.
Sono stato con Janne a Paloheinä, e mi sono divertito molto (ma sarà diverso domani, quando tutti i miei muscoli cominceranno a lamentarsi).

Bar Coluzzi

There in Australia the day always started well, with cappuccino and cornetto at Bar Coluzzi (http://www.portrait.gov.au/exhibit/masters/p4.htm).

Luigi Coluzzi, a Roman boxer from the San Lorenzo district, migrated to Australia in 1956, where he became middleweight champion. He was in the cast of the film “Il nostro campione” (http://italian.imdb.com/title/tt0048431/combined) and he is considered to be a forerunner of the espresso in Australia.
He still drops in every morning at his bar in Randwick, where he entertains the customers with his stories and his songs, showing with pride the countless photos which decorate the walls and portray him with VIPs from all over the world.

He makes a cappuccino to be envied by the most famous Roman bars, and he is a true supporter and promoter of the Italian culinary tradition and culture. Unlike the pizzeria “Zia Pina” at The Rocks, which shamefully offers to its customers microwave-made pizza.

Meeting Mr Coluzzi was a real honour, and I’m keeping with pride the card with a dedication he left me:

Là in Australia la giornata iniziava sempre bene, con il cappuccino e cornetto del bar Coluzzi (http://www.portrait.gov.au/exhibit/masters/p4.htm).

Luigi Coluzzi, pugile romano di San Lorenzo, emigrato in Australia nel 1956 e diventato campione dei pesi medi, protagonista del film “Il nostro campione” (http://italian.imdb.com/title/tt0048431/combined) e considerato uno dei precursori dell’espresso in Oceania, ancora si presenta ogni mattina nel suo bar a Randwick, intrattenendo i clienti con i suoi racconti e le sue canzoni, e mostrando con soddisfazione le innumerevoli foto che decorano le pareti del suo locale, che lo ritraggono con personalità storiche da tutto il mondo.

Offre un cappuccino da fare invidia ai bar più famosi della capitale, e ciò lo rende un vero sostenitore e promotore della tradizione e cultura culinaria italiana, a differenza della pizzeria Zia Pina di “The Rocks”, che vergognosamente offre ai suoi ospiti pizze fatte al microonde.

E’ stato un vero onore conoscere il signor Coluzzi, e conservo con orgoglio il biglietto con dedica che mi ha lasciato.

FOMS

The FOMS meeting was very interesting and productive. I could finally see the faces of many people I only knew by name, and discuss with them about the latest status of open source multimedia.

I wish free media formats like Vorbis (http://www.vorbis.com/) and Theora (http://www.theora.org/) could gain more and more popularity, and spread as a valid alternative to proprietary formats like WM and Real.

Il FOMS meeting è stato interessante e produttivo. Ho finalmente potuto vedere le facce di tante persone che conoscevo solo per nome, e discutere con loro dello stato attuale della multimedialità open source.
