Lordi

Finland has just entered the history of the world song.
A Finnish rock band, Lordi, won last Saturday the 51st Eurovision Grand Prix, international song contest in which 24 different countries took part.
The usually calm Finns (maybe also eager to forget the new defeat at the Ice Hockey World Championship) poured out all their enthusiasm celebrating all night long.
I was waken up in my sleep by gleeful shouts; but at that very moment I didn’t really realize what was happening: I actually thought it was a nightmare or, to say it better, a dream.
Well, I have to say I’m a bit disappointed that now this group of monsters replaced the blonde sirens as a symbol of the Finnish beauty…

Vaaleanpunainen paita

The “Giro d’Italia”, one of the most important cycling competition in the world, has just started. Following the footsteps of the great cyclists who are competing these days in my country, yesterday I decided to go for a cycling adventure.

My friend Luigi, before leaving last September Nokia and Helsinki to go back to his Milan, bequeathed me, among other things, his bike. During the long winter it was safe in Nokia’s underground; yesterday I decided to take it again: I pumped up the tyres and prepared my bike for the great debut.

Here is the description of my adventure:

Ecco la cronaca della mia piccola impresa:

16:00 – Preparation
I visit the Helsinki’s public transportation website and using Journey Planner I check the route: 12.6 km in total.
With wise foresight I print the maps of the different legs.

Ore 16: Preparazione

First leg: Out of Nokia
Start time: 17.30
The first challenge is getting out from Nokia’s garage: I get some help from my friend Mikko who, thanks to his higher experience, shows me how to open the shutter. Once out, I have to face the first Mountain Grand Prix: the exit ramp. Even if with some problems, I manage to reach the road.

Prima tappa: fuori dalla Nokia
Partenza: 17.30

Second leg: through Lauttasaari
Start time: 17.40
I head for Lauttasaari, which provides cyclists with a bridge to cross the sea. It’s the first time I’m pedalling after many years, but I immediately feel comfortable.
I have some problems in finding the right way, but thanks to the map I have with me I manage to keep the right track.

Seconda tappa: attraverso Lauttasaari
Partenza: 17.40

Third leg: from Helsinki to Espoo
Start time: 18.00

I finally find the way out from Lauttasaari and I reach the cycle track which skirts the Länsiväylä, the highway which connects Helsinki and Espoo. The landscape is fascinating: the sea, the trees, the sky.
I stop to take some pictures:

Terza tappa: da Helsinki ad Espoo
Partenza: 18.00

You can see the highway from the cycle track - L’autostrada vista dalla pista ciclabile

Fourth leg: the climbing up home
Start time: 18.30

This is the last part of my journey.
I keep going along the highway for a while, before exiting towards Merituulentie.
I’m a bit lost, but a sign reassures me:

Olari: I’m almost done!
I start thinking that is gonna be easy, but for the first time since I’ve been living here I realised that my apartment is on a hill…
The last part turns out to be very demanding, but eventually I make it and, really exhausted, I park mi bike:
It’s 19, time to start preparing dinner.

Quarta tappa: la scalata fino a casa
Partenza: 18.30
Penso tra me: “Ormai è tutto in discesa…”

Sunrise 5:01. Sunset 21:35 (but at 22 is still bright)

Summer has arrived!
Yes, yes, summer!
This morning I went to work wearing only a shirt.
Yesterday I was walking around in Helsinki at lunch time, and at one point I realised it was warm: a feeling I had missed for almost one year!
However, even this year spring flew, and went away in a couple of weeks.
Are you interested in knowing how the weather is evolving over here?
Visit Finnish Metereological Institute: http://www.fmi.fi/weather/local.html?kunta=Helsinki

Good summer to everybody!
(Ok, now I try to appear excited, but I know that in a while the rain season will start…)

Alba 5:01 Tramonto 21:35 (ma alle 22 c’è ancora luce)

E’ arrivata l’estate!

Buona estate a tutti!

Vappu!

Vappu takes place on the Labour’s Day and it’s a very important festival in Finland.
If you want more information about it please refer as usual to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vappu#Finland

Today everybody is wearing the typical university student’s white cap. Elderly people also proudly wear their cap, now yellowed with age.
The event of the day is the picnic, which somehow also marks the beginning of the summer activities. Today I had a picnic with some friends of mine, in Seurasaari (http://www.nba.fi/en/seurasaari_openairmuseum), one of Helsinki’s islands.
The food was good and the weather wonderful: I even managed to sunbathe a bit!

o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vappu#Finland
